GKC REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE LTD: COMMITMENT TO A GREEN FUTURE

BRIEF OF PROJECTS SPRING 2024

The past few months have been very productive for GKC. There have been several interesting projects, which allowed our company to achieve some important developments. Challenging technical issues remain on every client’s requirement list.

Some of the project carried out were:

  • Water blasting and coating carried out on 3 x 207K DWT bulk carriers on deck, including hatch cover, hatch coamings and outfitting. Project was realised during sailing.
  • Within 12 days, overhauling of MAN B&W 6L16/24 was completed, as well as block, bedplate and crankshaft replacement.
  • Overhauling of various types of main and auxiliary engines.
  • Extensive piping renewal on 2 x 16K DWT LPG carrier.

Above all, GKC strives to maintain a high level of safety and environmental protection.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS TO HAVE MAJOR IMPACT IN COMING DECADE

Important environmental initiatives are underway within the maritime industry - and as a result in GKC Repairs & Maintenance L.T.D. too, as ship repair and maintenance is one of the most significant sectors of the industry; yet shipping must play an even larger role in addressing climate change, largely through mitigating carbon emissions.

Reflecting this, it is said that new environmental regulation is the issue most likely to occur in the next 10 years, while also seeing it as having the third highest impact.

GKC Repairs & Maintenance L.T.D. is implementing new strategies in accordance with IMO guidelines, in an effort to set the example for other companies also, to follow a more environmentally friendly path from now on.

Full ahead

The pandemic that started in 2020 has affected the entire global economic activity in various ways. COVID-19 has multiple and far-reaching consequences and as the pandemic crisis was spreading, the activities of shipbuilding and repair companies have been severely affected. One year later, in June 2021 with pandemic's related slowdown, GKC’s activities has returned to almost full capacity. Having taken all the necessary protection measures and informing our personnel and customers accordingly, we continue vigorously and hope for the continuous resumption of work in our industry.

GKC implementating measures against COVID-19

With a sense of corporate responsibility and keeping in mind current developments combined with state guidelines, we would like to inform you that GKC Repairs and Maintenance LTD proceeded to a series of preventive measures with the aim of respecting, protecting the health of all our fellow humans and our responsibility to the human resources of the company and our clients for treatment of Coronavirus (COVID – 19).

More specifically our company has taken the following preventive measures:

  • Limited appointments at our company premises. Telephone communication and web meetings are favored. Technical and operations department remains at your disposal daily while meetings will be limited to the most needed.
  • Antiseptic fluids have been placed at the reception area and at the entrances to each area of the company for use by visitors, clients and staff.
  • Cleaning of offices and communal areas has been intensified.
  • Communication with the competent services has been established and any further action deemed necessary will be taken.

These days, the need to maintain our temper seems more urgent than ever. Information from reliable sources can help in this situation. Covid-19 has entered our daily lives and it is important that we all act in the right way of high individual responsibility & seriousness, maintaining all required safety measures to ensure our health safety.

Brief of Projects Spring 2020

There have been some very busy months with interesting projects, which enabled GKC to proceed with some key advances. Challenging technical issues remain on every clients requirements list.

Some of the project carried our were:

  • Water blasting and coating carried out on 116K & 103K DWT Tanker vessels on deck , including outfitting and WBTS. Project was realised during sailing, with time adjusted according to the vessel’s schedule.
  • Cargo holds treatment works were completed on a 50K DWT Cargo vessel in less than about 4 days. Waterblasting at 1200 bars carried out, followed by coating. Side shell was also treated.
  • Within 12 days, overhauling of Yanmar 6N21L-EV was completed, as well as block, bedplate and crankshaft replacement.

Above all, our company is trying to maintain a high level of safety and environmental protection.

"What have we been up to?" - First Quarter 2018

The first quarter of 2018 pushed GKC forward on multiple aspects:

- GKC has made a successful transition from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015. The ISO has been accredited by Lloyd's Register. You can ask for a copy of our certificate to update our enlistment as your supplier.

Brief of Projects Fall 2017

During the last few months, GKC’s personnel engaged with various projects. We briefly list some cases below:

Inert gas generator cooling chamber was replaced within 4 days with 4 fitters/welders on board a series of parcel tankers, 74000 DWT. A wide range of access works carried out in order to perform subject project. 

Main bearings, thrust bearing and big end bearing replacement of a main engines MAN 8L58/64 was achieved in 9 days with 4 engineers on board container vsls.

Urgent repair of main sea water suction piping system with divers assistance. Subject works carried out within 2 days of non-stop work.

Complete overhauling of a MAK 8M43 and M43C (30000 running hrs) i.e. cylinder covers maintenance, cylinder liners removal, main bearings, thrust bearing, big end bearings replacement, as well as crankshaft and camshaft vibration damper replacement was achieved within 14 days with 4 engineers. Subsequent repairs that carried out on the same series of vsls, were the overhauling of auxiliary engines, repairs of cell-guides of cargo holds and other steel and piping works.

All works were delivered on specified time leaving our customers satisfied with the results, looking forward for future cooperation and more projects to come

GKC New Premises

GKC welcomes you to our brand new premises

As of this week, GKC Repairs & Maintenance Ltd. has relocated to company-owned offices in Piraeus. The renovated space consists of premium offices, with reception, meeting rooms and an exceptional floor garden.

Clients and partners are openly invited to visit our new premises, to enjoy the refreshing atmosphere that inspires to us a new era in ship repairing services. The GKC employees will be glad to welcome you at Leoforos Chatzikiriakou 15-17, Piraeus 185 37, Athens Greece, and show you around!

GKC completing MRV installations

Following the start of the application of the MRV regulation, GKC Repairs & Maintenance Ltd has handled over 25 projects so as the subjected vessels to comply with the new requirements.

The MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification) requires ship owners and operators to annually monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions for vessels larger than 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) calling at any EU and EFTA (Norway and Iceland) port. Data collection takes place on a per voyage basis and starts 1 January 2018, which calls for immediate action by the ship owners. (source: DNVGL.com)

More specifically, in a timeline of 17 months, GKC has been on board 28 vessels, including cargo vessels, container vessels and multipurpose vessels, with two electronic engineers and two certified welders for each ship, and has completed the installation of MRV projects, including the setting and commissioning of the systems.

Currently, the key dates for the MRV are:

·         31 August 2017 – Companies to submit monitoring plans to verifiers for approval

·         1 January 2018 – Vessels to start Per-voyage monitoring and reporting

·         30 April 2019 – Verified annual emission reports submitted to the EC

·         30 June 2019 – Emission data made publicly available by the EC

This cycle will then repeat for subsequent years.

BRIEF OF PROJECTS – FALL 2016

The latest months following the exhibition of Posidonia 2016 were very productive for GKC team.

Over the summer season, GKC proceeded and completed a variety of projects on various ports worldwide.

More specifically, GKC team completed projects such as MRV systems installation and commissioning;

EU Shipping MRV Regulation came into force on July 1st 2015. MRV stands for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of fuel consumption. All Shipping Companies operating in the EU have to develop their monitoring plan until 2017.

 

 Last but not least GKC team completed overhauling on main and auxiliary engines, various steel and piping works, meeting our customer’s expectations in every project. All works were delivered on specified time leaving our customers satisfied with the results, looking forward for future cooperation and more projects to come. 

GKC's first participation in Posidonia 2016

GKC Repairs & Maintenance Ltd successfully participated in Posidonia 2016 that took place on 6-10 June 2016 at Metropolitan Expo. Hundreds of Greek Shipping Community customers honored us with their presence and turned the GKC stand into an exhibition meeting point and an ideal spot for gathering of old and new acquaintances, problem-solving and target-setting activities as well as exchange of information on market views.

We would like to thank all participants for this impressive outcome and to reassure our clientele that GKC will continue all efforts in order to honor your perennial trust and support. See you at Posidonia 2018!

105000 DW Tanker water blasting and coating project

GKC completed a complex project on a 105000 DW tanker vessel. 

Our technicians proceeded with water blasting and coating on its deck, including outfitting. The whole of the process was realised during sailing, with time adjusted accordingly to the vessel's schedule.

Christmas Surface Protection Project

During Christmas and New Year holidays, GKC was occupied with a project of specialized surface protection on a bulk carrier of 23484 dwt. Waterblasting at 1200 bars has been carried out, followed by coating of side shell and four cargo holds including hatch covers, hatch coaming and cross-decks.

More specifically, on the side shell the common coating specification applied. The initial estimation of cargo holds area to be blasted and coated was mutually indicated at around 45%, however after the first application of waterblasting, the damaged area revealed to be more than 85%. After agreement of both parties on the findings, one touch-up and one full coat was applied.

Cargo holds treatment works were completed within 4 days.
